Spontaneous Mini Thoughts - Day 1

It's tragic.  It's the "I'm hooked on stupid TV shows" season of life.... DWTS Monday Tuesday, Idol/Voice Wednesday Thursday, exhausted by Friday.  Then I don't watch TV again until SYTYCD... I need a DVR.  Why I'm obsessed I don't know because I really don't have time to watch them with my Mission and work and life in general (wait.... as in General Hospital?) - but if I time dinner right at that time - and then of course the dishes afterwards.... just sayin.  I'm now stuck on critiquing almost everything about everyone.  My favorites are the Toll Free number people that call and annoy the sock off of you - I have fun with them.  "I don't think that was your best performance - I mean you meant well but you just didn't sell it like I think America would like you to!"  Usually the line is silent afterwards.  I find that they don't call me back.  TV bad habits are easily broken though.... Until Bachelorette comes on.  I'm hopeless.  My mini thought for the day:  Can you please adjust the antenna while you're up?

Thirty

So... it's been 30 years ago today, that we hitched up.  It's a quiet morning at our house.  We decided to take a few days off and do a few things around town.  This image of us was included in our wedding announcement, is fun to see actually - some things are missing from us today.  Obviously a little less hair for Del and oh lookie - an extra chin less on me.  Little did this couple know that they would have 4 amazing kids, 4 amazing in law children, and 3.5 grand kids 30 years later.  We've lived in 2.25 different places... our original home in West Jordan, and an apartment while building our home where we live now.  Del finished off his Masters Degree and started traveling internationally for his company.  I've been able to travel with him for a few of those times.  We've gone through 4 family cars and well - several versions of cars and trucks for Del, his always included some form of rocket attached to it.  We've had fun with boats, and snowmobiles and Harley's and bicycles. We've planted trees, and gardens, and memories.  We've made wonderful friends that have helped us through and have influenced our lives.  We lost Del's dad several years ago but are still  blessed to have 3 remaining parents here on earth.  Our brothers and sisters in our families have been a solid part of our world, giving their time and love to our family.  Our children have given us the greatest joy and been the greatest blessings to us.  Nothing on earth has compared to the experiences of love we've had because of them.  Our grandchildren remind us of the years and years of 4 kids within 5 years of each other and those years and years of noisy church benches when Del was in the Bishopric.  We've survived band concerts, dance recitals, and soccer games.  We've rejoiced in High School and College Graduations.  There have been hard times.  Times when the towel was just too easy to throw in -  but here we are.  Older and wiser.  I can't help but think that these two had no clue what they were in for.  But never the less, here we are.  It rained the day of our wedding.  Del picked me up at my one bedroom apartment in his '65 Vette... booyah.  Del's family arrived the night before - we didn't know if they would come because Del had joined the church and they weren't too happy about that.  It meant that they waited outside as we were married in the SLC Temple.  I borrowed a dress from my sister in law... Del wore a white tux with tails.  We were very scared - but happy.  We had a few pictures taken, had a little lunch with our family, and our neighbors had a little open house for us that night in their home.  Very very small event.  Two days later we had to be back at work.   We spent our honeymoon at Snowbird - it was beautiful.  My parents have been married for over 60 years, I think it's worth a try to get there.  I believe we've made the very best of these past 30 years.  We've raised our children the best we could, we've seen a bit of the world and found that the most beautiful places are right here at home.  We've served the Lord and given him our sons for Missionaries, and now we are serving our Mission just passing our 2 year mark.  We've served in our ward in many callings, we've served our community, we've helped our neighbors and friends.  There have been quiet days - when we've not found the way to each others hearts, tough days of doubt and hurt and pain.  But here we are still.  Today we'll just spend some time in old places that we love, enjoy a few hours of laughing, having some good things to eat, and just time talking about the past and the future of our lives.  In all of this we have found some kind of love that just sticks around and keeps us glued together.  Gotta go... my groom awaits.  Happy 30th Anniversary Gomer... let's buy another boat.

3 Blind Mice - RIP

I visited with my mom last Friday.  She doesn't remember that I'm coming, nor does she remember that I've been there.  She always says to 'Call me when you get home so I know you are ok" and then she never answers the phone.  So I could die on I-15 and it wouldn't upset her much. Kidding.  I struggled with going that day.  My week had been awful, and horrible, and ugly.  I wanted to crawl under the covers and sleep for 3 days straight - wait - 4 days, no 5 days straight.  Maybe I would get up and drink a Pepsi now and then, and eat a cookie.  But I promised myself and my mom (not that she remembers) that I would make sure I made our visits each time.  We sometimes have an agenda, most the time we don't - we act on the newest and greatest emergency at the moment.  I walked in that day and stripped her down, the bedding down, the clothes in the closet down, and went to start the wash.  (don't worry - I made sure she wasn't naked for long - and that she had a wonderful bath without worrying about things)  As I went downstairs I could smell this awful smell and I thought, "Ok - so here's what your emergency is this time...."  I couldn't find the source right away and so I lifted the lid of the washer to put the clothes inside.  There splattered around the washer were bits and pieces of  little mice - fur everywhere - an leg here - a tail over there - and oh my the stench of death was in abundance.  My mom is the cleanest person on earth - and she would have died if she knew that even one mouse was in the house, so I didn't tell her.  I just scraped out the little friends, gave them a funeral and sang the 3 blind mice song in their honor... ok there could have been 3 in there.... and disinfected the entire washing machine.  All is well people - and I got a great laugh out of it.  When I asked mom about what was in her washing machine.... she said, "I noticed that my black socks were in there and I washed them...."  I said, "Yep, you certainly did - the warm fuzzy ones."  I finished cleaning the house, and we made sure her home was shining clean, laundry done, beds made, calls returned to friends, and memories remembered.  (Might I add.... no more mice...) I drove home that night late - tired, still laughing, but at peace.  It happens every time.  The moments I have left with her that she remembers things are priceless.  The memories she's forgotten kill me.  I KNOW that one day - my kids will find Mickey Mouse in the laundry, that they'll make sure I change my underwear, and that they'll remind me that one day I was something special.  I hope they still love me - like I love my mom.  I hope they have patience with me - and remember that once I was young and vital in some way.  When you've lived for over 80 years, I think you're allowed to let a few things slip.  I love her with all my heart.  I hope to be just like her in many ways - except for her laundry activities from last week.  The next day, I did get under the covers.  Gomer and I turned off the phones, and computers, and TVs, we shunned our Mission responsiblities and slept the day away - totally 100% exhausted, except for when we had a cold Pepsi.  Don't miss a moment of the events life brings you by surprise.  They'll prove to be the best of the best.  Off to make dinner..... Mouse-ka-Bobs... with Gomer, and perhaps, some laundry.

Sunday Sunday.... where to begin...

Yesterday.... oh yesterday was a day.  Sunday's for me begin at 4 am - work - then to serve in our Mission at 10 am.... then everything that happens between then and 4 pm... yesterday was a day.  I know that I should be blogging about all of the events going on in our family.... of my beautiful grand kids and the one on the way... but there is much in the innermost parts of my soul that has been worked on lately.  I let  bits and pieces of my mission out now and then - sometimes because people ask - sometimes because I can't hold it all on my own and I have to let go of some of it.  Del was home not feeling well - I wanted to claim not feeling well but something made me get in that car and drive there asap.  The first thing I do when arriving at church is look around to see if my 15 plus families made it there - if they have shoes on - and ask the spirit to tell me if they've eaten that day, or that weekend.  I know 3 of my single moms aren't there - because they pulled a Sunday shift at work - that means that 7 children under the age of 14 are home alone and I will drive to their homes to make sure they are safe, and leave my number with them if they are scared.  I looked over to see my 95 year old sweetheart Fred there - he winks at me when our eyes meet.  He calls me beautiful, I remind him that he needs to get his eyes checked.  I see my cancer patient, my 2 walker racers with their tennis balls attached to their walkers in different colors - heaven forbid they should mix those things up.  I see the newborn baby born to the family living in a travel trailer - not a double wide mind you - but one you camp in.  It's another girl - and the dad wanted a boy.  I notice my Road Home friend has made it - he's writing a letter.  Halfway through the meeting he walks from his bench halfway up the room to the back of the room where I am and hands me the note, then walks back.  I thank him with a smile - he does this - writes me notes in church.  In this one he writes that he doesn't think his ready to get married because he has to fix his mind first.  I nod and agree because Mental Illness is his best friend.  I remind him that I haven't encouraged him to get married - I tell him that what I said was that he is so full of love he would be a wonderful companion for someone someday... when he gets out of the homeless shelter, which I know he will.  Then I remind him that he writes like a girl and he laughs.  I see Jerry - who hasn't missed a week of church in 6 months even though he's not a member.  It's warm in the church, and I slip him a granola bar.  One of my families makes it - shoes on, dress on, ties on.... but they probably haven't had an appointment with a shower for a month.  I still hug them and tell them they are beautiful.  The husband usually wears a bathrobe... we're moving up these days.  I smile at the 18 year old girl that just delivered a baby, she rocks it, it's beautiful, she looks like she's scared to death as a new mom.  I know that this baby doesn't have even half the chance she had, and the father is already gone.  One of my families is a broken family, there are illegal immigrant issues, children being drug back and forth, and in-laws with mob connections.  It comes in second to the fact that there was a murder in our ward last week.  3 brothers living together in a house that attended class and sat by me - one of them killed his brother - we don't know which one was killed because the remaining two haven't been seen since.  All this happens each week, all week almost daily - something that rips my heart out.  I've been asked and it's actually one of my least favorite questions - so please don't ever ask me... "Do you think you're doing any good - will they ever change?"  That question is one I'll never answer.  There isn't an answer, there isn't a solution.  But yesterday I spent about 2 hours with a person that listened to my every word - words from my mouth that I had no part of, but was truly spoken by the spirit.  He cried when he thought that he had caused pain in my life from the problems that I had to deal with him over.  I told him of how he was such a blessing for me - how he had taught me things that I could never have learned.  I reminded him that he was the kind of friend to Del and I that we wanted to get an invitation to his daughter's wedding someday.... I told him he was loved, that he was worth it, that he mattered.... This grown man bent over, put his face in his hands and sobbed.  We all have problems in this world - shouldn't we have someone tell us that we matter sometimes.  Every road is dusty, muddy and sometimes endless - but isn't it nice to know we are loved?  I reminded him that our Savior died for him because he was worth it.  A different man left that room that day.  He took something with  him that money cannot buy.  It was Hope.  If all I do day after long day is show someone Hope... then the rest really doesn't matter does it.

To my children and their families - YOU are my HOPE for the FUTURE.  I have given to you my all, my everything, all that I have.  You have listened, and become more than I could have ever imagined.  When I get old (er than I am)... I want to go to church with my tennis ball walker, in my bathrobe, my big gulp from 7-11, and I hope and pray that someone brings me a granola bar and and a note.  I can hardly wait for next Sunday.... until then - there's Monday through Saturday... and what they bring.   You are loved, you matter, you are worth it.  Repeat after me....

And On A LIGHTER NOTE:  I wore my cowboy boots to church yesterday -  a person asked me what I called them... I said right out "Poop Kickers"  (except I said the S word) ..... he said he wanted some of those.  Flattery - gets you every time.  and they still won't release me....

X-tra special Question....

Seriously folks.... I have boxes and boxes and boxes and perhaps even more boxes of pictures of my kids.  Some of those are of old boyfriends and girlfriends.... some serious and some just friends.  Many prom pictures, and fun date pictures and crazy band tour romances.... but what to do with them.... hum....

They ARE a part of their lives - so they should be fun to put into a scrapbook of the year that they happened.  Some were a tad more painful, and may not have a place in any of their books.  But each picture is a part of the fabric of their lives.  Lucky for them - they kissed a few toads before they married their incredible loves of their lives.  Ok - well maybe not Ashley - she saved those kissers for Michael... (so she says)  I still have my old prom pictures - and if those aren't 'gag me with a spoon' moments - all I need to to is pull those out and the night belongs to hysterical laughter from the kids.  Yep - hot dates - but I look like a total tomboy in a dress and ew... butt ugly.  I still have them because the stories behind them are pretty fun too.  I asked one of my children what to do with the pictures and letters and cards.... from their high school dates..... They suggested....
A big fire.... and random dancing around the fire pit...

Booyah, where are the matches?

I found mine and Gomer's engagement pictures...
He had hair - I had a waistline
I think I'll keep those.
What did YOU do with YOUR pictures?
