My Warrior

I have been so touched by the responses to my post about Elder Hillary. I am grateful for all of your comments, prayers, and support. Here's what transpired over the past week. We had to wait until Saturday to have the surgery because he had already had some food. That meant they monitored his heart all night because the collapsed lung compresses on the heart. The surgery, was to last about 45 minutes and then recovery, lasted about 3 hours - long nervous hours. The surgeon came out and told us that they had to remove a 3 inch wedge out of his lung - there had been previous scar tissue apparently. He was able to show us pictures - which confirms that he is as handsome on the inside as he is on the outside! (New twist on 'hot ribs') He settled well that night - he was on an upper body epidural block that was inserted in his spine for pain. Pain from - a chest tube, two upper incisions, and a 4 inch opening in his back. It would now just take time to heal. Not a missionary picture you want to see your son in....The long week included making sure that someone was with him at all times - as a set apart missionary - that meant a Priesthood holder. Del spent as much time as he could until he was required to travel to DC for business -which meant that Mike, my son-in-law took his turn being with Ryan along with his wife Ashley, and myself (I count - the church said), and Mandy. Matt, Ryan's brother called every day from Washington, everyone was always just a call away. Our stake President and his counselor came one night (really amazing blessing/visit), and President Dean from the MTC and his counselors took some time. President Dahl asked about Mandy being there - I told him that Mandy had informed me that she had 'held the Priesthood many times'. Thus she was able to stay with Ryan - gotta love Mandy. During their visits Mandy was insanely funny - she always had hospital gloves on and one day she wore a surgical mask. She found some scanner and was scanning everything so we probably bought 6 hospital beds and a couple of silver bed pans. Ashley and Mike brought scrabble - our favorite game to all play, except when one of us is on Morphine and the only words you can spell are: on, the, fox, and if. Dang funny... The week included 2 performances for Mandy, traveling from Sandy to BYU everyday and traveling home in tears each night. Talking on the phone to stay awake, getting to sleep at 11:00 PM and getting up at 3:00 AM for work and starting over again each day. Many moms never get to see their missionary in action - but I was blessed to do just that. Each day - he made his bed, read his scriptures, pulled out his language studies, wrote in his journal, and prayed. The nurses fought over who would get to take care of him. No TV, no radio, no phone calls out - and no complaining came from him. When you walked into his room - you felt the spirit - you couldn't miss it - it enveloped you. I was grateful for that feeling - it was comforting and reassuring that he was never ever alone. I listened to church CD's on the way down so that I would be spiritually ready to walk into that room. One day - Elder Sybrowsky from the Quorum of the 70 visited with him - he wanted pictures of him with Ryan - and he counciled him and left his blessings with him. Awesome. President Dean and his wife stayed with us during the surgery - and they carried a special spirit from the MTC that was so strong. I'll never forget their visit and the honor of being around them. The fasting of the Zone in the MTC was timely and worked it's miracles. There were a few setbacks as they couldn't get all of the fluid out of his lung - scared me to death but eventually Ryan started getting up out of bed- and walking the halls trying to show them he could do it. He visited with people in the hallway after they noticed he was wearing an Elder name tag. By the end of the week the doctors said that it only be 4 weeks before travel could be taken on with his lung and all instead of the 6 weeks. They already had plans for him - as his zone leaves on Monday, March 2nd without him. His heart was heavy about that - but his obedience and trust is larger than life. I had the honor of praying with him each night - during which involved pleading, and gratitude, and hope. On Friday morning the doctors removed the tubes and a couple of hours later they removed his epidural - and monitored the pain. At 5 PM he was loaded into an MTC van and sent back - but not without a final time to kneel in prayer with us. The nurses came out of their rooms to say good bye to him - and they cried when they seen him in his suit. Several nurses were from Mexico and had worked with him during the week on his Spanish. They tucked notes and money in his pockets. It was a long walk down the hallway - a walk of tears. I cannot begin to thank them all for helping him through this - they treated him with great respect and those that were not members of the church asked many questions. The Lord has his own time - and to respect that time helps your testimonies grow so much. We felt the prayers of the MTC Missionaries, of family and friends, and of our ward family. As we left we passed under the flags displayed in the hospital hallway - we do not know Elder Hillarys destination - but he's praying to serve under this flag. Today - we found out that the State of Chihuahua is under attack - I don't even know if the 7 missionaries will be able to leave tomorrow - I now pray for new things. It's hard enough to say good bye the first time - there they stand with their packed luggage and their bravery face on. But to say goodbye the second time and they stand there with their ER bag of clothes and an RX for pain and you know that there are still stitches in your sons body - now were talking tough - especially when he looks at you and says, Mom - where's your faith? He's larger than life to me today. Thank you all for your patience in this long entry - I have some special family far away that have asked me to post this - hope you haven't minded the ride. I want to tell my kids how much I love them for their support - not a day went by that they didn't call or come over. They kept drawing all over the doctors/nurses board to the point that they couldn't write on it anymore and just left it like it was. Ryan could look up and see their love every day. All of our missionaries need your prayers - brand new greenies in the MTC (Elder Eldred just entering last Wednesday), and Old Crusty Ones in the field (Elder Meyer in South America) - pray for them all. Good luck son - thank you for letting your old mom along on this journey, I'm proud of you in everyway, and so is Heavenly Father. Dream Big, I love you.

To keep me humble, on the way home from the hospital, the Lord gave me one more trial as I found out that my sweet friend Luanne, mother of 5, was killed in a rollover accident - and the tests of our lifetime continue - with a promise and belief in the Plan of Salvation to cling to. Like Mandy posted on her blog - TELL EVERYONE YOU LOVE THEM OFTEN...

You'll find her on my pedistal...

Mandy is a Music Major at BYU with an emphasis on Saxophone Performance. She is required to have a Jr and a Sr recital. So during the hospital week for Elder Hillary, Mandy had her recital which had been scheduled for 2 months and it had to had happen. Many professors and her private teacher was there to have input and grade her on her performance. She already had to play with a worried heart because of her brother being in the hospital. The day of the performance - Mandy called me at about 3:00 PM, 2 hours before showtime. She was sick - and through her tears on the phone told me that she had a fever and she said that she couldn't do it. I knew what this meant and I also knew that it was time to switch crisis plans. I went over and tried to cool her off, physically and emotionally. I made her sleep for 20 minutes and I stood by her side. Then I woke her up - we put the dress on her fevered body, she pulled her hair up, reapplied her make up over the tears and escorted her to the Madsen center. The heavens opened and the angels stopped their singing to stop and listen to who on earth was making more beautiful music than they were.... it was Mandy. She played nonstop for over an hour, dazzling, making us all cry, and all this time not seeing all of the guardian angels holding her up. Mandy has been a soloist for the Utah Symphony, the BYU Wind Symphony on their East Coast tour and so you might want to watch for her in the near future. Wait - she performs as a soloist in CHINA next! Here are a few shots I was allowed to take since there were no recordings or flash photos allowed I feel fortunate to have these. Beautiful eh? Her accompanist was Jayne Galloway - the best in the state - and she was also accompanied by a string trio - talk about the wow factor!
Here is a picture of Beautiful Lee Lee (Ashley) thanks for all your help Crashem!
The star of the show - The Mandy, and tired, old and wilted mom...
Just when you thought that she could do no more - the next night she performed with the BYU Wind Symphony and she told me that she had a little solo and I might enjoy listening to it - so I took off from the hospital and headed over to hear her. Here was this sea of black tux's and black concert dresses and my beautiful little blonde one stood up in the middle of this sea and she performed the entire song with the symphony accompanining her! Ok - so I'm now on auto cry. This was the stage setting - the place was packed and afterwards I had to wait in line just to see my own daughter - you are amazing Mandy - promise me you'll never let this dream end.

Happy Birthday Matt!

Eat your heart out world - this is my son! Wait....Holy Freak you're 25? I'm not that old? I'm still of child bearing years - NOT! In the midst of the tests of the heart from this weekend - I am finding a new set of tears. Some happy ones for a son that 25 years ago left a beautiful place and became stuck with me as his mom.... tragic. Lucky for me though!

I just wanted to tell you Matt that you brighten up the world. In doing so - you provided another generation with a brighter world also. There are just not words to express how much I love you and how proud I am of you in every way. There is a kindness and joy that only you have. You have battled all odds and have been victorious. I see sacrifice, devotion, faith, love, and a beautiful family all because of your sweet heart and passionate desire to take care of those around you. You ARE my sunshine - you Utiawanianasingtonite. Happy day... you are loved. Skeletonz hates you, and Mory wants to go for a ride with treats.... I'll be waiting for Bethany to post the videos of you with only your shorts on, sitting in the high chair, eating YOUR cake with your hands.... dare ya, double dare ya, Mandy calls you out as a chicken if you don't....bawk bawk bawk..... get 'em Mandy! Wear your helmet... der der der der der.....

Gonna need some help here folks....

I'm not really one to reach out and ask for help. I'm pretty stubborn that way - but I need something from each of you tonight. This afternoon my handsome Elder was taken to the ER in a Provo hospital with a collapsed lung. He is to have surgery tomorrow asap. I was somewhat confused as I received the phone call from the Emergency Room doctor who told me that Ryan was in the hospital - I instantly thought that it was my son-in-law Ryan and that he had been hurt somehow. The Doctor said - this one has Elder before his name, and my heart sunk. Most moms would love to have a little glimpse of their missionaries - but not in a hospital gown, in a hospital bed with wires and tubes and monitors all over him. What took me by surprise was the enormous smile on his face when I first saw him - he didn't want me to be worried, but in his eyes I saw fear. He was actually running yesterday and had a little ache in his chest, and today it just wouldn't go away. Elder Hillary was sent for an X-ray and before they knew what hit them, Elder H and his companion Elder Davidson found themselves on a magic carpet ride to the ER. His companion never left his side. In fact when President Dean came to the hospital he was surprised, but grateful to see them still side by side. It would be the last time they see each other - as they just received their flight itinerary today for Mexico as they are to leave on March 2nd at 6:00 am and be in Mexico by 1:00 PM. Ryan will now be recovering for the next 4 weeks after surgery. I was able to meet his companion and to feel of the amazing spirit and love between the two of them. Elder Davidson said that he couldn't leave him and that they had already knelt in prayer - he said - it will all be ok Sister Hillary. The news traveled fast in the MTC and in his zone, where each and every missionary has dedicated a fast in his behalf tomorrow. His personal belongings were brought down from the MTC and inside next to his clean socks were scribbled notes shoved in there by fellow missionaries - thank you Elders! Ryan's concerns are not for the surgery, or the time he has to wait, but in the unknown territory of where he will serve. He wants to still serve in Mexico - but the Lord will decide that, as it is now sent to the First Presdiency and they will decide, we need not have a say and I trust them with all my heart (and with my son) - but we do have faithful prayers that can be offered up. So to whomever you pray, what ever religion you have chosen - there is someone bigger than life to you, would you join in prayer for this amazing human being, my son? I left him tonight late, but laying over the chair by his bed was this white shirt, with his name tag still in place (apparently it was red tie day) I looked back at my son before I left and there he was, comforting me, just like the person he is. I want to thank my children who instantly joined their love together for him. President Dean said that this would be a great trial time for Elder Hillary, and that he would probably have his first baptism before he even leaves the MTC. I live in a ward of miracle workers - and so I'll leave you to do what you do best. Thanks everyone, I'll keep you updated. Gotta go hit the knees....

Random Bragging Rights...

Just take a look at this beautiful child! This is Mason - he is the grandson of my best friend Elaine, and son of her daughter Erin (the AMAZING super hero cape maker - see www.plumpearapple.com and get yours ordered today!) (or you can log on to ''Mason and Family' from this blog for the rest of the story) Erin had some wonderful pictures of Mason taken by her friend, the photographer, and the publishers of this magazine asked to feature the photographer - and the photographer said she wanted to feature Mason! I love my own kids, and I'm crazy about my grandson - but I am a true believer that we should always have room to brag about others 'happy moments'. So not only should you STAY IN and order your super hero capes from Erin, you might want RUN OUT to see if MeeMaw (Grandma Elaine) will part with one of the magazine from the boxes full of magazines she bought.... or you can see if you can find one in a local store.

This just takes the cake...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDREW!

It was partae time with both of the Hillary family and the Stimpson family as we came together to celebrate Andy's 1st birthday. First of all we feasted on Schloppy Joes, (must know your Saturday Night Live Clips) and yum-o salads and cupcakes from the Stimpson homestead. Ashley created an amazing drink from scratch that we devoured, and Mandy.... well you ask Mandy to just bring a salad.... and she has no boundaries as an artist and so we awarded her with the Food Network Grand Prize and then decided to included her creation to the feast. instead of just looking at it. Bethany had made a cute cake for Andrew and we were curious as to why the kid was being 'clothing optional' readied - let the games begin..... it took about 4 minutes to go from this:

to this:

and in case you don't believe me here's the proof!

It was so much fun celebrating the first year of this little guy's life. He has brought so much love and life into the world. The best things in life for me are certainly being a mother, and now a grandmother. Here's the cute little family with one of I hope many of my grandchildren to come. Hey- and I didn't even have to clean him up! (The Aunties all fought over him to do just that) See you all next year when there certainly will be more stories to tell. See you in April for BYU Graduation - thanks for making the trip to Utah! .....and Bethany.... you owe me cupcakes (: tee hee....
